Cynthia Wetzel McCarthy, 43, a teacher and former Peace Corps volunteer, taught in the Marshall Islands, a Navajo mission in Arizona, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Gainesville, Fla.

A resident of Gainesville and formerly of several Chicago North Shore suburbs, she died on November 22, 1996 at home in Gainesville, FL, of breast cancer.

Mrs. McCarthy grew up in Skokie, Deerfield and Lake Bluff, graduating in 1971 from Deerfield High School. She received a bachelor's degree from Loretto Heights College in Denver and a master's degree from Southern Illinois University.

She married Kevin McCarthy. Other survivors include her mother, Shirley; two sons, Erin and Matthew; two brothers; and a sister.
